Exercise:Your own work

The course literature explains that most of the work so far created has been in response to specific exercises however there is a potential value beyond the brief in that this produce is personal and can be made into an artefact.

I am so excited to bring my work into being in a form that can be useful in some way eg as a T-shirt, Teacloth, decorative porcelain.

It is lovely to set out all my work and establish a “gallery” of pictures and fragments of illustrations that I enjoy purely from a conceptual or aesthetically pleasing point of view:-

Then a treble cleff design is worked digitally too:-

This might make a nice summer tea-cloth and could be digitally enhanced:-

Or the stylised version for a T-shirt:-

or part of it:-

I may digitally experiment with these for a T-shirt design:-

Or a T-towel:-

of

Or just use a sample as a kind of colour block:-

I feel this is plenty to choose from and have enjoyed the process as a celebration of the coursework.

Most of the above appears to have an association eg, the daffodils to Spring, the roses to music, the cupcakes to cooking, the sandals to summer & holidays.

Although it is a little out of season now (September 2020), the decision is made to prepare the sandal image for a T-shirt design for a beach side stall – the clientele may be holiday/day trippers, feminine, of ages 20+.

Today 18th September an order for T-shirts has been placed – this is a first time I have ever designed my own T-shirt. It feels a real success to have done so and I cannot wait for the order to arrive.

To print the design I selected a carbon-neutral printing company, totally organic biodegradable inks, containing no animal products, free of metals & certified safe for children & babies. 100% non-hazardous.

Waiting for the T-shirts is a nail-biting experience – how will they look, how will the design appear on the material, what will the colours be like…… etc.

Friday 18th September – Over the Moon !!! – the T-shirts have arrived. The print is amazing and the quality of the cotton is excellent.

Saturday 19th September – experimenting to see how they wash in 30 degrees & yes, they are fine .

Sunday 20th September – a local afternoon walk to see how it feels wearing one !

The coursework is having a little interruption due to the distraction and and delight of all of this!.

Not quite so summery, however interesting to see how a black T-shirt would look and it does made the image stand out.

The company also offers jumpers, sweatshirts and …. long cotton dresses all for personal design printing. I am going to celebrate and purchase a dress & send a few T-shirts for family & friends to enjoy too.

Additional note:-

Writing this on 24th January 2021 to just add a photograph of the “Ode to Joy” Tote bags with my abstract design which have been well received by those who received one:-
