Consolidation of coursework

5th September 2020. This weekend is an opportunity in between completing Assignment Four and before progressing to part five, to revisit and consolidate previous coursework.

Starting with the 1950’s referencing, I am researching material and hope to meet the expectations of the exercise in an improved response. Watching a TV documentary about the 1950s , the optimism and affluence of the era with developments in science and technology, has really generated my enthusiasm and understanding into the history of this time and I feel in a much better position to create a visual representation.

6th September 2020 – pencil drawing completed for 1950s exercise. I am aware coursework assignment two has already been submitted and evaluated however I find it really satisfying to have the confidence to return to an exercise I previously found too challenging at the time, yet through learning and receiving feedback, I am now able to draft an illustration.

Even though I have submitted assignment four there is also areas in that coursework I still to need to complete and go over however sometimes it is good to allow some space before returning afresh to the subject material. Perhaps art work is never really completed – rather a continuous process of drafting, reflecting, renewing , improving etc.

It explains in the coursebook that ideally a student will have access to photoshop or other similar software to create and design images. And will practice and develop skills specific to software use during the course. However it also says “you can do this course without using such software”.

At first I thought I would manage the course without use of software. However I feel to be able to appreciate how illustrators work, it is interesting to learn about the IT packages available. So the course is helping to increase my awareness of the usage, benefits and types of software. Whilst I have not been able to further my understanding and access learning on these packages sufficient to be able to apply them to OCA exercises at the same time as working on the course, at least I have continued to seek support in progressing in this area as much as I can at the moment.

The photoshop introductory course at the local college was very good.

November 2020 and I re-read my reflection here on the use of technology. And in fact I have achieved some further basic training in both Adobe photoshop and Illustrator via Eventbrite and feel I now have the confidence to practice and enhance my IT skills.

I hope to treat myself to a graphic tablet and pen tool in the future as trying to paint and draw with the mouse on a computer is less accurate.

In addition to re-visiting the 1950’s exercise I have also tried responding again visually in abstract form to music and worked again at the character develop exercises.

So it is about returning to areas of course-work with renewed insights from the feedback, doing further research, re-reading and learning from the exercises and seeing how to further develop the visual forms.
