Digital Art School

Digital art school came to my attention through circulated NHS email. It is an open digital art event for hospitals however also open to the general public. I consider it a good opportunity to learn different art techniques and meet professional artists via zoom With permission I am able to time my lunch-break to join in the programme at 2pm on Thursdays.

The first programme led by Mark Titchner demonstrated art marbling, Suminagashi with use of ink, washing up liquid, two brushes and a tray of water. It was relaxing watching the ink circles being created as the alternation of the loaded brushes pushed them out into the water with the viscosity of the washing liquid.

Mark had provided printouts from his work in London. He combines words in his art and he has created posters for city billboards eg “Please believe these days will pass” providing hope at these difficult times. Mark Titchner has redesigned the text in a poster format, adopted a block font and adjusted the colour palette to create a contrast with the grey buildings the billboards often sit between.

I did have ago at this marbling at home and it was interesting to move the ink through the water with the washing liquid brushes. However I found the ink pattern did not hold on the paper sufficiently to create a pattern. I need to revisit this with different inks. It does require some practice.

On 2nd July Sarah Berman did a fun workshop on collage. Again printouts were provided, this time of interiors of rooms and colourful pictures to cut out and work with. Sarah worked with posca pens to draw in details and coloured acetate over the original design.

Sarah is a designer who lives in London and has worked in textile designs and branding.

Although these workshops are mostly suitable for hospital in-patient settings, I am finding it really interesting as a member of the public as it is opening a vista to view the work of these artists and to learn something of their practice.
