Comments on First Assignment

Today is March 4th and I am submitting my first assignment tomorrow (5th March) and reviewing the last two months study of working through the exercises for Part One of the “Key steps in illustration course”. The process has required careful time scheduling and proved both challenging and interesting.

I am aware that at various points in preparing the exercises within “History of illustration” and “Getting the gist” there were stages where I considered the work complete. However by furthering ideas and following them thoroughly it helped to develop the outcome.

I recall studying OCA drawing course where I tended to submit work that with a little additional effort and detail could have led to an improved outcome. I almost considered the “mermaid” image in the “Getting the gist” exercise complete without exploring how it would look with the tail turned to the left. But with shaping this idea it generated an opportunity for furthering the design as it linked in with the wording of Joy.

There is a sense of apprehension in submitting these first exercises and assignment to OCA Tutor. However the feedback will be helpful in guiding an understanding of the expected requirements for the rest of the course. It is therefore appreciated that the first assignment is not part of the overall assessment process.

Thinking about my aspirations for this course.  My concern is that I have completed studies with other academic institutions in other subjects in the past and although it expanded my horizons as a student at the time, my world occasionally reduced back once I had achieved the certificate or I found opportunities where I could apply only part of the learning.  These are the qualms I have.  So I am hoping that I can apply my OCA studies eventually in the “real world” . Whilst I recognise it is my responsibility to further any professional development I do hope studying illustration will eventually lead to opportunities beyond the course itself even in a non-professional capacity.
